Johann Wilhelm Schirmer was a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School. As teacher and professor at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe he influenced generations of landscape painters worldwide. Major artists of the Hudson river school came to Düsseldorf to be taught at the academy. Our occupation with Schirmer's oeuvre goes back to 2001, starting with a retrospective exhibition at the Stadtmuseum Jülich. Our research focusses on Schirmer's painting technique.
